Delving into Iron Man: A possible peek at Iron Man 2 and other Marvel Movies

Image Iron Man the movie is the first film from the newly formed in house Marvel Enterprises movie studio (the rest of the Marvel films like, Spider Man, Daredevil, etc. have been under Columbia Pictures) and what a debut it is. The film blew me away, completely passing my expectations (which were pretty high) and was such a success fiscally speaking that Marvel has announced four more films: Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America – The First Avenger, and The Avengers. After hearing this and speaking with some friends I realized that not everyone who saw the movie will understand all the nuances and hints that are in it, so here is the guide to some of the stuff a non comic book person would have missed.

The Order of the Ten Rings: The Order of the Ten Rings is the terrorist group that kidnaps Tony Stark in Afghanistan. If the name seemed sort of out of place for a group of (presumed) Muslim extremists it should. The name is actually a reference to one of Iron Man’s main foes, the Mandarin. The Mandarin gets his powers from the ten rings he found in a crashed alien space craft in the forbidden “Valley of the Spirits”. He’s supposed to be a descendant of Genghis Khan and is a huge pain in Iron Man’s side for much of his comic life.

Hearing the groups name made me think we might get to see the Mandarin, but it looks like the group was headed by some guy named Raza. The plus side is that we never see Raza’s body; we only assume he’s killed when Obadiah’s men destroy the camp. This could be a clue that the main villain in Iron Man 2 will be the Mandarin. It would be cool to see Raza come out of the desert sporting some new power rings and an enormous chip on his shoulder. Though why a Middle Eastern guy would name himself the Mandarin is a mystery.

Image War Machine: War Machine is James Rhodes’s (Tony Stark's military friend, played by Terrence Howard) armored alter ego. When Rhodes helps Stark into his armor before Iron Man goes to fight Iron Monger we get a shot of Rhodes looking at the spare suit of silver armor. He finally says “Next time baby!” before hopping a car to follow Stark. This hopefully alludes to the fact that ole Jimmy Rhodes will don the armor in the next film and we will get to see two Iron Men kicking the crap out of the Mandarin.

Image Iron Man Theme: This one is truly geeked out. At the awards ceremony at the beginning of the film, Tony Stark is presented with an award from the Military. When they announce his name a band starts playing. The song they are playing is the theme song from the old Iron Man cartoon show from 1966.

ImageNick Fury: If you stayed to the very end, past the end credits you were treated to a scene where Tony Stark gets home and is confronted by Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson) and told he wants to speak to Tony about “the Avengers initiative”. Nick Fury is the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D. which originally stood for Supreme Headquarters, International Espionage, Law-Enforcement Division, but was then changed to Strategic Hazard Intervention, Espionage Logistics Directorate, which was then changed to Strategic Homeland Intervention, Engagement and Logistics Division for the movie. The Fury character was originally a white man, but in the ultimate universe the character is black and is actually based on Samuel L (with his permission). This makes the casting COMPLETELY perfect (the picture here is of Fury, not Jackson, can you tell the difference?). Especially since Fury is a grade A asskicker in the comics and Jackson is a grade A asskicker in the movies. Match made in heaven. It also makes one wonder about how far in advance Marvel has been planning this.

Image The Avengers Initiative: What Fury is talking about is the number one super team in the Marvel Universe (way better than the X-Men). The original Avengers consisted of Thor (movie in 2010), The Hulk (movie in 2008), Iron Man (2008), Ant Man (talks about a movie in 2012), and the Wasp (no movie, but will probably be in the Ant Man movie since they are married). The Avengers as they are most popularly known are lead by Captain America (movie in 2010, the movie is called Captain America – The First Avenger). You can see where this is going. If Marvel can pull off having all the characters get their own blockbuster (hopefully) movie, and then get all the great actors together it would be awesome. Think about, Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man), Edward Norton (Hulk), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury), Kevin McKidd, aka Lucius Vorenus from Rome (Thor). That’s one hell of a movie no matter who play’s Cap or Ant Man. Throw in some heavy hitting villains (the first Avengers foe was Thor’s brother Loki, but any big Marvel bad guy or bad guy group would be awesome), and maybe a cameo by Spider-Man (who is a reserve member of the team) and you get a collective comic book fanboygasm. If the rest of these movies kick even half the amount of ass that Iron Man did, 2010 will be a freaking amazing movie summer.
