Someone will have to explain this to me. How is selling 500,000 units in a week better than selling 2.4 or 2.8 million copies in 24 hours?

Not really. If a game has 10 million subs and pretty much requires you to buy an expansion to progress further in the game you're going to see most of those people preorder or buy the expansion in the first week. New releases of games on the other hand are trying to attract new customers many of which will trickle in. WoW didnt start with over 10 million subs it built up to it slowly.

I've had to use two different articles to get this information, and I'm not sure if the info is dated or not, but WAR claims to have 750,000 users while WoW claims 11 million players. In fact, according to WoW (so I don't know if this information is biased or not), they have already taken some users back who left to play WAR.

I'm not trying to bash WAR or anything. When I get stateside, there is a strong possibility that I will play this game especially if that's what everyone else is playing, but I can't say I'm not tempted to pick up Lich King... especially since I already have a character going. Unfortunately, my work schedule is preventing me from playing anything too time intensive like a MMO right now. I just look at numbers like 2.8 million and 11 million compared to 500,000 and 750,000, and I'm not sure if I'd get too excited yet. I'm sure Star Trek's MMO will probably be lucky to put up WAR like numbers when it is released, but it won't stop me from buying and playing the game.

Well, 5 months after it released WoW had 1.5 million subscriptions. And it is the biggest MMO ever, to think that WAR will topple it, especially right away is not likely at all. To tell the truth numbers don't really even matter after a certain number, being that servers are going to have about the same amount of people in them, WoW will just have more servers.

Lich King does look good though, and now that I've been playing WAR for a bit I can see that it's not quite as polished as WoW (but it's far far younger so that's to be expected). I do really like the public quest idea, constant RvR, and the ability to join a battle ground rather quickly from anywhere. My complaints so far are minor, I don't like double click targeting, clicking on myself, and some of the enemy animations are too choppy. I also don't like the lack of variety in how my weapons look, I got a blue ax yesterday off a drop and it looks exactly the same as my old ax, though this could be a low level thing.

If you're asking if I've been to the Outlands yet, the answer would be a no. I have played very little WoW since I've gotten this job. As far as my original reply, I'll try and sum it up in bullet format.

- Nothing in WOTLK looks good or interesting to me. It's all new haircuts, new dances, ripping off a part of WAR no one gives a shit about with achievements, and new pve. Lame

- Agreed on WAR's polish. I'd say it's about as polished as WOW when it first released. The problem is it isn't competing with WOW when it first released. Someone in mma who can kick Royce Gracie's ass isn't exactly going to be champion against the best in mma nowadays.

- My main problem with WAR is the carebear segregated pve areas preventing meaningful small scale pvp. The game was designed for vagina servers, and as such didn't want players seeing the other faction when pveing. This makes open rvr servers pointless, because a lot of places you can't even get to the other side's pve area. So basically you have to fight in the rvr lakes, which means if you find good small scale pvp, which we have before, you have a snowball effect of noobs turning your 6-8 man into a zerg. It's like in Forrest Gump when Forrest runs accross America, and eventually dozens of people are following his every move.

- My other problems include the broken contribution system (if you want to win the gold bag at a keep, show up at the last minute while doing nothing. That's how I got my annihilator set), weapons and armor all looking the same, horrible itemization for my class (If I'm best optimized for melee, my healing is reduced 40% and my damage increased 25% while giving me 10% more crit chance, making strength WAY more valuable than willpower, which means stupid hybrid strength/willpower gear is fucking retarded, which damn near every piece of dok gear is). I have other small issues with the game, but nothing too serious. I wish it had something like WOW's engineering. That was fun, and VERY useful back in original WOW. Wiping 11 people with 5, because you all rez on top of them with sapper charges = win.

- No idea what Adam is talking about with double click targetting. Maybe clicking someone, then clicking a defensive target? And there is a hotkey to target yourself. Forgot what it was, cause I use healgrid due to a lot of target changing, and most of the time I target myself is when I select my target from the grid.

- WOW has better combat than WAR, but hasn't had good world pvp in years. IMO they purposely killed off world pvp due to idiots who rolled pvp server when they shouldn't have, then cried about getting ganked when they should have known what they were getting into. Nowadays pvp server = pve server in wow

- I still play WAR, because there is still a lot of good open world pvp to be had. We rolled on a pretty competitive pvp server that was very hyped, so a lot of good players are there. The last week or so has been very active, and a ton of fun. We had a fun battle this past weekend where 10 or so Order were inside a house, and it was near impossible to get in after them (going in got you killed pretty damn fast). So we had our tank stand in the door and healed him till we all had rank 4 morales, then ran in and wiped them all with our 6 man. It was awesome.

To sum things up, WAR isn't the end all be all of mmorpgs, but it still has fun open world rvr, WOTLK is gayer than Christopher Lowell felating Lance Bass in a convertable PT Cruiser, and I'm awesome.

My .02! WAR does seem to be getting a lot of positive buzz, but its going to fall into the same category that every other MMO does: Is it better than WoW? Age of Conan got a lot of hype, but quickly fizzled. Its currently $15 on Targets clearance aisle right now. So did Guild Wars, Lord of the Rings; and a handlful of others.

I've played WoW, and while it was enjoyable, I wasn't able to get into it as much as a lot of other people. I told Mepheston once, and I'll happily say it again that I've never seen anyone get as much out of a game as Meph has w/ WoW. There's a reason its still the best MMO out there and the reason all other MMO's are compared to it.

It being better than WOW would depend on who you talk to. From what I've seen, only the very hardcore pvp crowd enjoys it more than WOW. Everyone else will for the most part enjoy WOW. For me, I played WOW quite a bit, and didn't like the direction the game went.

As far as Age of Conan goes, it failed, because it was a pile of shit. It was fun when I first picked it up. AMAZING graphics, interesting setting, great ffa pvp, etc. Then when that "new mmo" feel left, all of the bullshit in that game took over. The combat system was stupid, it was bugged to shit, the after 20 content was very slim (from what I heard, 45+ was non-existant), and the devs would break more shit than they'd fix when they'd patch something. It had amazing potential, and could have been good had it been released 2 years in the future.

The only fun I had in AOC was ganking everyone in the noob zones. It was awesome being able to talk shit to people you killed. I'd gank someone, send them a "learn to play, scrub" tell, then put them on ignore. The best was when I unknowingly did that to a guildie (not sure if you can still gank guildies, but you could when it released), and he got all pissed. Then I talked him into helping me gank, and all was well

My sleep schedule gets thrown all off, and all I want to do after I get off work is vegetate. I go streaks of three days without even sitting down at the comp. When I do sit down, I have forums and e-mails to catch up on. I barely have time to play Audiosurf. If I had a more consistent schedule, I wouldn't be dead-ass tired when I get off of work. Not sure if the house is still playing, but the last week or so of WAR has been more fun than anything I ever did in WOW.

Basically, they added influence for all the open rvr zones. So you kill people, take objectives and keeps, and you get influence for rewards. Most aren't that great, although I did get an amazing chalice.

Anyway, these rewards, along with a buff to renown gained in open rvr, have pretty much moved the pvp out of scenarios and into open rvr. At first, it was just huge zergfests, but now it's kind of winding down. Normally there will be like 2 groups up to a warband attacking something. What we do is defend keeps with our 6 man, and it's fucking awesome. We've owned full warbands of attackers with our 6 man several times over the past week. We also helped defend a fortress where there were 30-40 destruction defending against at least 200 order. We had our aoe group there (4 casters, 2 healers), and there was a tank group blocking people on the stairs. After the hour of defending was up, I looked at my tome and had gotten 1037 kills over the course of the defense. It was nice

I don't know if anyone here played wow when the honor system came out and before battlegrounds, but things seem to be turning in that direction. Like at first it was huge zergs, then settled down to wandering small groups (same with DAOC 8 man fights). All said and done the pvp kicks ass.

Anyway, things are good now. I'd easily call the small guild I'm in right now the best on the server. And we have an alliance with the top pve guild. We're starting to see more roaming 6-12 man groups of Order, which is a lot of fun.

I'm still in, but my current comp freezes a lot now when under stress. Good news is the rest of the new comp parts should get to my crib today. (Holy crap my new case is huge), so I shoud be back in the game this weekend.

I'm on Darkcrag. I'm a Chaos chosen in the second tier of the Empire vs. Chaos story. I'm currently using my non violent skills to please Tzeentch (I went into a town and convinced some church guy that the captain of the guard was having an affair with the Mayors wife, pretty cool quest chain). It's tough for me to do the world PvP right now because I'm only lvl 12 and all the Order guys attacking the town are lvl 20ish, I did manage to ambush a lvl 16 bright wizard and rock his face off though, that was highly satisfying.
