Some helpful tips/tricks for those playing the Enemy Territory: Quake Wars beta and for those who are planning on buying the game. This isn't a full on guide, rather some simple advice for those having questions on how certain things work. I tried to list only useful info that I myself didn't pick up on right away.
General Purpose Tips:
- The Strogg Hog is great for crashing into other vehicles. You can easily take out a tank by ramming into it.
- To use a spawn host, walk up to it and press 'use' (default f). You can only use one with ribs sticking out, and they go down when someone claims the spawn host. The next time you die, you will spawn where the spawn host was. Only techinicians can make spawn hosts from dead GDF.
- The Cyclops can go into siege mode by pressing crouch (default 'c'). You shoot at least twice as fast when in siege mode, but you are lower to the ground and can't move. Press jump (default 'space bar') to get out of siege mode.
- Strogg players get grenades when they pick up health packs. Max of 2 grenades can be carried at a time.
- Strogg players can convert health to ammo, and vise versa using '+' and '-'.
- It is really easy to change to a more useful class if you are Strogg and have a spawn host nearby. Just use the spawn host (default 'f'), kill yourself, then come back as the class you want.
- The Tormentor is a paper air plane that shoots rockets. Even if you don't have a rocket launcher, shoot at it anyway. 1 rocket takes it down to less than 10% health, where an assault rifle will easily finish it off. I've killed one by myself with the GMPG.
- If you see a flying drone coming at you, shoot it down. It blows up harmlessly and hurts the person who sent it.
- Deployables are disabled when they get below around 2/3 health, so don't be afraid to toss a nade or 2 at one to take it out.
- Having your knife out makes you run faster. Larger weapons like rocket launchers make you move slower.
- The Strogg Icarus and GDF Husky both have anti missile decoy flares. The default is 1 to toss one out.
- Press 'm' to try and find missions before you do them, like capturing a spawn point, destroying a deployable, or taking out radar. You'll get a few extra experience for this.
- Right clicking when throwing grenades makes them sticky for Strogg, and tosses them underhand if you're GDF.
- Use your nades to set off mines. You'll be surprised how often someone overmines an area, and your nade sets them all off, which kills a few of his teammates.
- Don't automatically click "complain" when you get team killed. Most of the time it is an accident, where you crossed paths while shooting at the same guy. Not to mention the guy you complained against might be a medic, who suddenly decides he doesn't want to rez you.
- When tossing a grenade, hold down left click until it is about to explode before throwing. This makes it much harder for the enemies to dodge it.
Soldier/Aggressor:
- Completes "destroy" objectives
- If you are using a rocket launcher or heavy machine gun, keep your pistol/knife out to move closer, then switch back when in range. This will save you the hassel of walking so slow
- If you miss with a rocket, it is a good idea to switch to your pistol instead of waiting on a reload.
- The heavy machine guns are very innaccurate, but do tons of damage. This makes them best when at close range. You can take out several people in a matter of seconds with simple spray and pray at close range.
Medic/Technician:
- Can see on the map where fallen allies are. Just look for the green circle with an ankh in it
- If you are strogg, try not to constantly spam stroyant cells until you are out of charge. People will accidentally walk over them, and absorb them for nades. It is better to sparingly toss them out, so you have enough charge to heal someone
- GDF Medics can take out spawn hosts with the defibulator
- Strogg Techinicians can make spawn hosts from dead gdf. Just use the stroyant tool (default 5, or press 'use' on the corpse).
Engineer/Constructor:
- Completes construct/disarm objectives
- To set up a trip mine, right click with a proximity mine in a doorway, or other narrow space.
- Don't put too many mines close together, and don't put them in a spot where your team is congregated. One time I tossed a nade into the sewer control room, and it set off proximity mines that killed 4 people in addition to 1 that died from my nade. That cost them the game. Put your mines between you and the other team, most preferably in doorways or other narrow spots.
- The plasma/grenade launcher attachments aren't very good outdoors, but they are amazing indoors, especially if you are defending. A few people spamming grenades at an entrance is hard to overcome
Field Ops/Oppressor:
- If your artillery is being blocked by an Artillery Interceptor Turret, use the default vampire/violator bombardment. It can't be blocked, and will at least disable the turret after the first strike.
- Never drop it in your own base, unless you want to tk a ton of people.
- Artillery is good vs infantry, Rocket artillery vs vehicles, and the Hammer is good vs everything
- Rail Howitzer is good vs infantry, Plasma mortar vs vehicles, and Dark Matter Cannon vs everything
Cover Ops/Infiltrator:
- Completes hack objectives
- When you are zoomed in with the sniper rifle, use the mouse wheel to zoom in/out quickly
- Your disguise goes away if you do anything besides stabbing someone in the back. And if someone sees you stab a teammate, your disguise will dissapear. Also, keep in mind you appear as the player you took the disguise from, so avoid that player. It is pretty obvious you are disguised when the person sees a dupe of himself running around.
- You can harmlessly run through Strogg shields when disguised
- Radar has a really large radius, so don't put it where fighting is going on. There are plenty of spots to place it where it won't get blown up every 5 seconds.
- Your grenades are EMP charged, and disable vehicles for 30 seconds
- If your flying drone gets shot down, you lose health. Try not to make them obvious when flying around (Strogg only).
- The GDF smoke grenade is very underrated. It is very useful to keep your team from getting sniped
