The morning practice sessions started in earnest at around noon. I was playing Ermac while Lost-Cauze (LC) took games against whoever was available. Ermac completely destroyed me on Monsoon but I managed to keep Phrantic a bit closer. After about an hour of straight playing it was off to Best Buy to fetch new monitors for LC and Gellehsak and possible a new mouse for LC (his Razer Death adder’s mouse wheel was acting strange) .
The Best Buy here in Elizabethtown is VERY small as far as Best Buys go. It was only about three quarters the size of your average high school gymnasium. Despite its small size their selection of monitors and gaming mice was quite good. LC got his new Death adder and then he and Gelleh picked out some cheapy E-machine CRT monitors and got in line. About this time we got a call from Forever informing us that the WSVG is planning on using LCD monitors. Now this might not seem like a big deal to most, but to pro type Q4 players, this is dire news indeed. LC looked like someone just puked on his dick while Gelleh simply sighed and went to fetch an LCD monitor.
The monitors we finally ended up with were LG flatrons. They are actually very nice monitors by any standards (except a Q4 pro, whose standards are set somewhere between the level of anal and unattainable) with 2ms response time and a 3000 to 1 contrast ratio. We returned to Enhance’s and set them up. Strangely they only came with VGA connectors, this was a non issue since we had plenty of adapters, but I thought that it is kind of weird that a monitor this nice would not come with a DVI. After tweaking the monitors for about a half an hour we achieved an acceptable level or performance. The slower refresh rate was affecting LC’s aim a bit but with a bit of play time he should be able to at least cope with the difference.
With the monitor situation taken care of LC opened his new mouse and started tweaking it. About this time he realized that a misplaced bind had been causing the problem and his original mouse was fine. He thought of taking it back but then said fuck it and gave me the brand new one!!! I was beyond excited to have this fine piece of gaming hardware. The mouse is smooth as butter on my QcK heavy (also a gift from LC, is this guy great or what!) and lights up with a blue LED that matches the rest of my gamer chic LED’s. Then it was off to Shogun steakhouse of Japan to celebrate LC’s birthday.
The steakhouse was a very nice place. It was one of those places where the whole party sits around a grill and watches as some Asian chef wows you with knife work and onion volcanoes. We all sat around and shot the shit and enjoyed a great meal while Icelore took pictures with LC’s camera like some sort of hillbilly Ansel Adams. We then retreated to Casa de Enhance to watch “The Hitcher” on his 60 inch TV (they should have called that movie “Terminator 4” as Sean Bean’s character manages to take out 1 college kid, a family of four, 20 cops, 4 squad cars and a helicopter, with a pistol…) After learning that all you need to destroy half a small country is a handgun and Sean Bean we hooked up the Xbox and spent the rest of the night playing Forza. Good times, but I’m not sure if my quake game is getting better…
