Sports Upsets After watching the New York Giants shock the undefeated New England Patriots last night, I decided to write up a top five sports upset list for FlamingBaby!

5. Golden State Warriors Defeat Dallas Mavericks – 2007

The 8th seeded Golden State Warriors had little trouble in embarrassing the number 1 seed Dallas Mavericks. Who coming into the game had a record of 67 – 15. The Warriors led by Baron Davis needed only 6 games to send the Dallas Mavericks packing.

4. New England Patriots Def St. Louis Rams – 2001

Yes, before the Patriots became the Dynasty they are today they were huge underdogs to the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl 36. The Rams dominating offense, known as “The Greatest Show on Turf”, was expected to roll all over the Patriots, but they were held to just 17 points, which allowed the Patriots to stay in the game. This turned out to be all the the Patriots needed, Tom Brady was able to drive them down into Field Goal range for the game winning field goal by Adam Vinatieri.

3. Appalachian State Defeats Michigan – 2007

This is quite possibley the greatest upset in the history of college football. Prior to the season beginning the Michigan Wolverines had to pay Appalachian State to even show up to play the game. However Michigan was shocked when the Division II champions were able to block the potential game-winning field goal and secure a win over Michigan in Ann Arbor.

2. New York Giants Defeat New England Patriots – 2007

Coming into this game no one was giving the Giants any chance to win, everyone expected the Patriots to complete their perfect season and make history. However Eli Manning and the Giants actually showed up and were able to keep the game close. The Giants defense led by Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora were able to hold the NFL’s number 1 offense to just 14 points and allowed the Giants to have a chance to win in the last two minutes. A poised Eli Manning was able to drive the Giants down to score the game winning Touchdown with just 35 seconds remaining and win one of the most dramatic super bowls of them all.

1. Duke Defeats UNLV – 1991

This matchup taking place in the 1991 NCAA tournments is the biggest upset ever in my opinion. The defending champion UNLV Runnin’ Rebels had an amazing record of 32 – 0 and were winning their games by an average of 27 points. Duke was expected to be blown out of the water in this game. However Duke showed up and with only 1 minute 30 seconds remaining they were trailing by just 5 points. Duke PG Bobby Hurley then hit a 3 pointer which brought them within 2 and with just 30 seconds remaining Duke had the tied the game. They then got the ball back again and Christian Laettner was fouled on a shooting attempt. With ice in his veins he was able to hit both free throws and Duke pulled off the biggest upset ever.
