Warhammer Online: Frequently Asked Questions

E-mail Print PDF

ImageThis is just a simple FAQ for those wanting to know more about Warhammer Online. The goal here was to come up with a quick reference page that is focused entirely on information with minimal bias/filler. I encourage anyone with additional suggestions to make them on them on our forums so I can include them. Additional sources are sited in cases where a few sentences wouldn’t do it justice.

The Basics

Q: What exactly is Warhammer Online (WAR)?
A: WAR is a fantasy mmorpg created by EA Mythic (creators of DAOC), and based on the Warhammer IP. More information on the Warhammer IP can be found here

Q: What other games has Mythic created?
A: The most notable is Dark Age of Camelot. More info on DAOC can be found here

Q: When is the game slated for release?
A: Currently slated for a 2nd quarter 2008 release. source

Q: Where can I sign up for the beta?
A: https://betacenter.eamythic.com/signup.php

Q: What are the system requirements?
A: This hasn’t been announced yet. A good speculation thread on system requirements can be found here

Q: What will WAR be rated?
A: T for Teen

Q: Will WAR be released on the xbox 360?
A: They aren't working on a release at the moment, but they may in the future

Q: Will there be voice chat?
A: Nope. Ventrilo ftw

Q: Will it be subscription based, or expansion based like Guild Wars?
A: Subscription based

General

Q: What is the max level?
A: 40

Q: How many different races will be in the game?
A: 6, or 3 for each faction. Order will have High Elves, Dwarves, and Empire. Destruction will have Dark Elves, Chaos, and Greenskins (Orcs and Goblins).

Q: How many classes will be in the game?
A: 4 for each race, which makes 24 total. None of the classes will be able to be used by the opposing faction, but they will all follow a certain archetype. Some more class information can be found here

Q: Archetype?
A: Each race will have a class for each archetype. The archetypes include Tank, Melee DPS (damage dealing), Ranged DPS, and healer/support. More information can be found here

Q: No stealth classes?
A: Nope. There won’t be stealth classes in the game

Q: Can players of different races, but same faction, still play together? As in if I’m a dwarf, and my friend is order, can we still play together, or are we stuck on our own fronts?

A: Yes. As long as that person is on the same faction, it doesn’t matter. You can travel to whichever battlefront you want

Mechanics/Gameplay

Q: What are the different server rule sets?
A: As of right now, there will be Open PVP, Core, and Roleplaying servers. Open PVP Servers have players flagged for pvp no matter where they are. Core Servers only flag you in the pvp areas or enemy pve areas. RP servers are basically just core servers, but players are encouraged to roleplay. This normally means stricter naming/chat policies, and a geekier player base. source (mbj is a dev)

Q: Is anything in place to discourage ganking of lower level players?
A: The chicken system is the main feature for this. If you enter the pvp area of a lower tier, you get turned into a chicken which does 1 damage to anything it hits. You turn back to normal upon leaving the pvp area. Source

Q: What major features will be in WAR that haven’t been in other mmos?
A: Public Quests and Tome of Knowledge are the Main ones. The guild system has also been enhanced.

Q: What are Public Quests?
A: These are multi-part quests that do not require the player to be grouped. Rewards are awarded at the end based on participation

Q: What is the Tome of Knowledge
A: The tome of knowledge is basically a Wikipedia for the lore system, with quests and titles added in. As you progress through the game, additional quests are unlocked, as welll as lore. More information can be found here and here

Q: Enhanced guild system?
A: Guilds have levels like players do, and can gain benefits. You also have a guild calendar, guild bank, news feed,  in-depth roster among other possible features. Guild Information

Q: How does the combat system work?
A: A lot of it is explained in the video below.

Q: Are there spell points/mana?
A: There are no spell points or mana. You use abilities based on action points that regenerate.

Q: How do interrupts work?
A: Interupts are done similar to WOW, where you lose casting time when hit. There are also abilities you can use to interupt.

Q: How is the cc? Are there spells like mezmorize from DAOC?
A: CC is mostly movement imparing affects and knockdowns from what I've seen. There are no aoe cc abilitize like mez.

Q: Will there be mounted combat?
A: There isn’t any in the game at the moment. From what I’ve seen, odds are it won’t be in at release.

Q: Is there collision detection?
A: There is collision detection between you and your enemies, but not your allies

Q: How does the RVR system work?
A: Explained in the below videos. The first one is a good overall explanation of how things work. The second video includes major changes to the game after beta reopened in December.

Q: What will death penalties be like?
A: There is no permadeath, and players do not drop their gear. Death should be similar to WOW

Q: Can I gain experience from pvp?
A: Yes

Q: I've heard the graphics look just like WOW. Is this true?
A: Stylistically, yes, the graphics are similar. I won't go too much into the history (Warcraft was originally based off of Warhammer), but Warhammer is stylistically similar while being darker and a little less cartoonish.

Q: If my city is sacked, can I still get stuff done?
A: There is a seperate part of the city for rvr, so quest and other npcs should be ok.

Q: Any other details for how city sacking works?
A: From what I've heard, after taking the city you have a period of time to "sack the city". As in, you have public quests that are rvr related, and can do other things such as possibly taking npcs hostage. The defenses get stronger after time to toss you out. No word on the exact mechanics of that

Q: Have any crafting details come?
A: No specific details as of yet, besides "it should be enjoyable"

Q: Will there be raiding
A: Yes. Only the bosses will be instanced.

Q: How does the pve work?
A: Quest based. This is a good video explaining how it works

To sum things up
- You don't have to start a kill quest to get credit for it. NO
- Types of quests are kill, tome, exploration, rvr, and public
